Starting Thursday, February 2, Mirage nodes 3 and 4 will no longer be available for interactive use. The nodes will be placed under control of the LSF scheduler, to test and configure data analysis and visualization workflows in preparation for the forthcoming Yellowstone environment at NWSC.

The remaining Mirage nodes (0, 1, 2, and 5) will continue to be available for interactive use. These four interactive nodes all have 128 GB to maximize the memory available to Mirage users. CISL is using the Mirage nodes with smaller memory (64 GB) for LSF testing. Please arrange your workflow accordingly.

The U.S. Global Change Research Program is soliciting proposals for the use of the Climate Simulation Laboratory (CSL) computing facilities, beginning August 1, 2012, and continuing through January 31, 2014. The DEADLINE for submitting proposals is February 20, 2012. If you are currently using the CSL and wish to continue using the facility after June 2012, please submit your renewal proposal and a progress report by the February 20, 2012, deadline.

The multi-agency CSL computing facility was established in 1995 and is dedicated to climate modeling in support of the U.S. Global Change Research Program. The CSL provides high-performance computing and data storage systems to support large-scale, long-running simulations of the Earth’s climate system.

This round of CSL allocations will have access to NCAR’s forthcoming petascale Yellowstone system, a 1.55-PFLOPs IBM iDataPlex cluster, as well as its associated storage, data analysis, and visualization resources. NCAR users attending the American Meteorological Society (AMS) meeting in New Orleans, January 24-25, have several opportunities to learn more about NCAR's forthcoming data-centric Yellowstone environment.

CISL will host a Yellowstone Allocations Briefing on Tuesday (Jan. 24) at 4:30 p.m. at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside in Salon D21/24. During this session, David Hart, CISL's User Services manager, will describe Yellowstone, the various allocations opportunities, and tips for writing successful allocation requests. Light hors d'oeuvres will be served.

In addition, Hart will be at the NCAR booth (#316) to showcase the Yellowstone system and be on hand to answer user questions. Presentations are scheduled for Tuesday (Jan. 24) at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and again on Wednesday (Jan. 25) at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

An installation issue was discovered in the previously installed version of netcdf-4.1.3 (only the netcdf-4.1.3_mpi version was affected, the netcdf-4.1.3_seq and netcdf-3 format versions were not affected and were not changed). The issue prevented MPI programs to correctly execute netcdf-4.1.3 distributed code.

We have fixed this issue, deleting and recreating /contrib/netcdf/4.1.3_mpi/

Netcdf-4.1.3_mpi is now linked to hdf5-1.8.6_mpi and not hdf5-1.8.6_seq, fully providing parallel functionalities.

If you had problems running netcdf-4.1.3_mpi previously, please try again.

UPDATE: We're reposting this announcement to highlight a clarification to the ASD eligibility requirements posted online. Eligible projects may span all of the geosciences and supporting computational sciences. 

 

CISL is pleased to announce the availability of dedicated, large-scale resources on NCAR's recently announced Yellowstone system from approximately May through July 2012 as part of its Accelerated Scientific Discovery (ASD) initiative for university and NCAR research.

NSF-supported university researchers interested in applying for ASD computational resources can view eligibility and proposal requirements at: https://www2.cisl.ucar.edu/docs/allocations/asd. Applications are due January 13, 2012.

NCAR researchers interested in applying for ASD computational resources may view eligibility and proposal requirements at: https://www2.cisl.ucar.edu/docs/allocations/2012nsc/instructions. NCAR ASD projects will be chosen from submissions for NCAR Strategic Capability (NSC) projects, also due on January 13, 2012.

The Yellowstone system will be a 1.6-petaflops IBM iDataPlex cluster with 74,592 Intel Sandy Bridge EP cores, 149.2 TB of memory, and 11 PB of parallel disk storage. Yellowstone is expected to deliver nearly 30 times the capacity of NCAR's current Bluefire system.

In concert with the Unidata Seminar Series, CISL presented a briefing on the Yellowstone system, NCAR's forthcoming data-intensive petascale environment, November 29, 2011.  The briefing discussed the Yellowstone hardware, including the disk resource and data analysis and visualization clusters, the software environment, and the allocations opportunities available to the various user communities.

NCAR users attending the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting in San Francisco, Calif., next week, are encouraged to stop by the NCAR booth (#1222) to learn more about our forthcoming data-centric Yellowstone environment.

Davide Del Vento, one of CISL's HPC consultants, will showcase the Yellowstone system and be on hand to answer user questions. Presentations are scheduled for Wednesday (Dec. 7) and Thursday (Dec. 8) at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. both days.

The Yellowstone environment at NWSC will greatly expand the opportunities for researchers in the geosciences and related fields. The new system will have more than 600 million core-hours available for allocation each year.
