HPSS data transfers reach record levels

September 16, 2020

CISL thanks all of the HPSS users who responded to the recent data usage questionnaire and have taken action to transfer their files to other storage spaces. More than 400 users completed the brief survey, providing valuable information on the status of data remaining on the tape archive, which will be decommissioned on October 1, 2021.

Read activity more than doubled as measured by TB of data read, and more than 2.5 PB of data has been deleted since the questionnaire was sent to users on August 20. More than half of the respondents (53%) reported that they have copied all of their data to another storage system or no longer need access to their HPSS files. CISL estimates this translates into more than 15.5 PB of data that will no longer need to be read. More than 16 PB of data belonging to users who did not respond is being treated as abandoned.

Please see this CISL documentation and our Migrating Files from HPSS tutorial for help and best practices for copying important files to other storage resources, or contact CISL for assistance with reading and transferring your data.
