Deleting your files from HPSS: A crucial step in the decommissioning process

July 23, 2020

Deleting your files from the High Performance Storage System (HPSS) is a crucial final step in preparing for the system’s decommissioning in 2021. That includes valuable files you’ve copied to another resource as well as files that are no longer needed at all.

The last step is crucial for a number of reasons:

  • It helps CISL track the progress of the HPSS decommissioning effort so we can keep users informed and better manage available resources.
  • It prevents unnecessary transfers of files you don’t need to keep.
  • It ensures that you don’t inadvertently tie up resources by transferring files for a second time.

As noted in this documentation, files deleted from HPSS cannot be recovered, so carefully evaluate your holdings to determine what to delete and which files to transfer to alternative storage. Also verify that any transfers you do need to make are done successfully before deleting those files from the tape archive. Be sure to contact CISL if you have questions or need advice on individual workflows and storage options.
