This class is now full, but due to demand we expect to offer it again.

The CISL Consulting Services Group (CSG) will present the training course “Python for Scientists” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, August 21. Participants in this hands-on class will learn about the Python programming language and the tools and modules that are most useful to scientists, including IPython, IPython Notebook, NumPy, matplotlib, mpi4py, and others.

Participants can attend in person at the VisLab in NCAR’S Mesa Lab in Boulder, or remotely via webcast. See the Python for Scientists course page for more information.

Brent Leback, PGI Applications & Service Manager for NVIDIA (which recently acquired PGI), will present “deep-dive” PGI compiler classes on OpenACC and CUDA Fortran on Aug. 19 and 20, at the NCAR Mesa Lab in Boulder. Both classes will be in the Main Seminar Room.

The OpenACC class is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19. Topics will include an introduction to accelerated computing, parallel and loop directives, kernels constructs, data directives and lifetimes, optimization strategies, CUDA-like interoperability, and others.

The CUDA Fortran class is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20. Topics will include an introduction to CUDA Fortran (CUF), CUF kernels, compilation, profiling, debugging, optimization strategies, OpenACC interoperability, managed data, and more.

Leback has worked in various positions over the past 30 years in HPC customer support, math library development, applications engineering, and consulting at QTC, Axian, PGI, STMicroelectronics, and now NVIDIA. Until recently he managed the compiler group at PGI.

CISL has updated the default Python core language to v 2.7.7 and also updated a number of Python modules and libraries so the latest versions are the defaults in the Yellowstone environment.

Upgrades included installation of the latest NumPy (v 1.8.1), SciPy (v 0.14.0), matplotlib (v 1.3.1), IPython (v 2.1.0), and many others. The latest IPython package, in particular, has many new features for parallel programming and several enhancements to IPython Notebook. See IPython to learn about using IPython on Yellowstone.

CISL staff used Tueday's extended High Performance Storage System (HPSS) downtime to prepare for an important tape-drive upgrade that will add 26 next-generation “D” drives to the 46 existing “C” drives in the HPSS environment. The new drives can read the existing 5-TB  C-generation media and newer 8-TB D tapes.

HPSS was unavailable from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. MDT. The upgrade and the recent completion of data migration from old media at the Mesa Lab to new media at the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center are expected to significantly increase the system’s bandwidth and responsiveness.

A new batch script example on the CISL web site shows Yellowstone users how to distribute job tasks across multiple compute nodes using the LSB_TASK_GEOMETRY environment variable. Consider specifying task geometry when a compute job’s workload or need for memory isn’t uniform, or you want to place frequently communicating tasks on the same node to improve efficiency.

Helpdesk and consulting office will close at 2PM today to allow staff members to participate in the Up the Hill race and UCAR party.

Users may still submit consulting tickets to cislhelp@ucar.edu, but those tickets will be addressed on Monday. Thank you for your understanding.

Periodically examine your High Performance Storage System (HPSS) holdings and remove files that you no longer need. This reduces charges against your storage allocation and makes the HPSS system more efficient for everyone.
