NCAR’s new Campaign Storage file system is being installed this week at the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC) in Cheyenne by CISL staff and engineers from the vendor, DDN. CISL staff expect to finish configuring the system by the end of June and have the new system ready to deploy in the first week of July. It will be made available to users soon after that date.

The file system’s initial storage capacity will be 20 PB with plans to increase the capacity each year. Campaign Storage quotas will be managed differently from the way users’ GLADE home, work, and scratch file space quotas are managed. Each NCAR lab will be allocated space in Campaign Storage and the labs will manage how their allocations are used.

The Campaign Storage file system will have a five-year retention policy, meaning files will be purged five years after their creation. Users will be expected to collaborate with CISL’s Digital Asset Services Hub (DASH) to develop data migration plans for storage needs that exceed five years.

Users will access and manage their Campaign Storage files using Globus services. To help users who are not familiar with Globus, CISL will be updating the existing documentation and offer training sessions that are tailored for use with Campaign Storage. Watch for upcoming announcements in the Daily Bulletin for the training schedule and notices on documentation updates.

A number of Geyser and Caldera nodes are now available for users to begin testing and porting their applications and workflows to the CentOS 7 environment. Documentation for how to do this is available here.

CISL staff have installed important software such as compilers, MPI and NetCDF libraries, and scripting languages including MATLAB and IDL. As announced recently, users will need to recompile their executables to run on Geyser and Caldera under CentOS 7. Job scripts also may need to be updated to run in the CentOS 7 environment as version numbers of most software on the systems will be different.

All of Geyser and Caldera are scheduled to be upgraded to CentOS 7 on Tuesday, June 19. Users are encouraged to begin testing on the new operating system as soon as possible and to contact cislhelp@ucar.edu with any questions or problems.

NCAR staff and university users of systems like Cheyenne and GLADE have diverse data management needs and levels of expertise, and CISL’s Digital Asset Services Hub (DASH) is dedicated to providing the necessary guidance and support. This includes evaluating extensive online resources that are freely available to everyone and selecting those that are most relevant to our users.

Sophie Hou, NCAR Data Curation & Stewardship Coordinator, recommends exploring the Data Management Plan Preparation Guidance and some of these free data management training and education resources to learn about topics ranging from why and how to create a data management plan to such best practices as assigning descriptive file names.

A recording of the May 25 tutorial, “Using Cheyenne, Geyser and Caldera,” is now available on the CISL web site. See the course page to review the presentation and download the slides.

The 70-minute tutorial familiarizes users with the Cheyenne computing environment; how to access software, including compilers and MPI libraries; submitting batch jobs using the PBS scheduler; and using Slurm to schedule data analysis and visualization tasks.

Cheyenne system administrators will perform preventative maintenance procedures on the PBS job scheduler Thursday, May 24, beginning at noon MDT. The maintenance is expected to take less than one hour to complete.

Most PBS commands will not work during the maintenance outage, including qstat and qsub, and new job submissions will not be possible.

No batch jobs are expected to be lost as a result of the maintenance. Jobs that are executing when the maintenance begins will continue to run without interruption. Jobs that are queued for execution or in a hold state will remain in those states until PBS is returned to service. Access to Cheyenne’s login nodes will not be interrupted.

Users will be notified when PBS is returned to service.
