University users who would like to have their unused Yellowstone allocations transferred to Cheyenne should make their requests well before the end of the year, when the Yellowstone system is decommissioned and the allocations expire on December 31.

The CISL Help Desk will be closed for the holidays on Monday, December 25, and Monday, January 1. Please send your allocation transfer requests to cislhelp@ucar.edu before Christmas to be sure the resources are available on Cheyenne on January 1.

Cheyenne users can now run jobs on the Geyser and Caldera clusters via the Slurm job scheduling system. To learn how, refer to the online documentation and consider attending one of the training sessions that are scheduled for December 4 and 19. Approximately half of the Geyser and Caldera nodes are accessible from Cheyenne. The remaining nodes will remain accessible from Yellowstone until the end of this month when Yellowstone will be decommissioned. Shortly after January 1 all of Geyser and Caldera will be available from Cheyenne.

The CISL User Services Section will present an in-person and online tutorial at 9 a.m. MST Tuesday, December 19, on how to run jobs on the Geyser and Caldera clusters from the Cheyenne HPC system. The Yellowstone system is being decommissioned December 31, but Geyser and Caldera will remain in production throughout 2018.

The 45-minute tutorial will cover submission and monitoring of jobs with the Slurm scheduler, running an interactive job, performing graphically intensive tasks on Geyser, and considerations when using Cheyenne and Geyser/Caldera together in a workflow. The session will include time for questions.

No Downtime: Yellowstone, Cheyenne, Geyser_Caldera, GLADE and HPSS

Cheyenne will be taken off line at approximately 10 a.m. MST today to allow CISL staff to install an updated version of the PBS Pro job scheduler system. The software update is expected to resolve the root cause of the recent system interruptions. The outage is expected to last until approximately 5 p.m. but every effort will be made to return the system to service as soon as possible.

A system reservation is in place to prevent batch jobs from executing after 10 a.m. All batch queues will be suspended and the Cheyenne login nodes will be unavailable throughout the outage.  All jobs that are still executing when the outage begins will be killed. Yellowstone users may experience brief periods of slow performance during the Cheyenne outage.

CISL will inform users through the Notifier service when the system is restored. We apologize to all users for the inconvenience this will cause and thank you for your patience.

A recording of the December 4 tutorial, “How to access Geyser and Caldera from Cheyenne,” is now available on the CISL web site. See the course page to review the presentation and download the slides.

The 45-minute tutorial covers how to start interactive jobs and batch jobs with the Slurm scheduler, performing graphically intensive tasks on Geyser, and considerations when using Cheyenne and Geyser/Caldera together in a workflow.

NCAR data management experts will engage the community in a poster session on December 11 at the AGU 2017 Fall Meeting to help shape a 2018 National Science Foundation workshop focused on developing requirements and expectations for a prospective new digital repository service.

The envisioned Geoscience Digital Data Resource and Repository Service (GeoDaRRS) would complement existing NSF-funded data facilities by providing data management planning support resources for the general community and repository services for researchers who have data that do not fit in any existing repository. GeoDaRRS would support NSF-funded researchers in meeting data archiving requirements set by the NSF and publishers for geosciences, thereby ensuring the availability of digital data for use and reuse in scientific research going forward.

The NCAR Data Sharing Service and other Globus services will be unavailable for several hours on Saturday, December 9, starting at approximately 9 a.m. MST. The service is expected to be fully restored and operational by 1 p.m. Globus transfers that are in progress will be suspended for completion after the service is restored.

The PEARC18 committee has extended the deadline for soliciting abstracts for contributions that will help shape the technical program of the next annual Practice & Experience in Advanced Research Computing (PEARC) conference until December 8. The conference will take place July 22-27, 2018, in Pittsburgh.

“We invite contributions and participation from everyone who works to realize the promise of advanced computing as the enabler of knowledge creation and application without unnecessary barriers,” the committee announced. The opportunity to submit proposals is open until 10 p.m. EST on Friday, December 8. Authors of proposals selected for technical review will be contacted by Friday, January 19, 2018.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Procurement, operation and management of advanced computing and data infrastructure

  • Facilitating productive and secure use of advanced computing and data infrastructure

  • Adopting and adapting new and emerging technologies

  • Creative uses of advanced computing and data infrastructure

  • Developing a highly skilled workforce realizing the full potential of all demographics
